Home Recordings. Children singing, screaming and storytelling.

Remember when you were a kid? Did you have a recorder? Even if you never held a microphone to your mouth and screamed making funny faces, I'm sure you can recall a time when you jumped around like a silly little monkey hooting and hollering. Maybe you still do! We hope so.

All recordings are sourced from cassette tapes found in thrift stores and junk shops, tapes dubbed for us and one tape was even found in a gutter! The only exception being the last track on this recording, by Grandpa Norm, singing to his grandson and we thought it fit quite nice on this compilation of home cassette recordings.

Known sources:

Justin (and Tanya) (tracks: 3/9/20/28)
Justin passed us these recordings in 2001. They were recorded in the early 1980's. Besides this small bit of information, Justin prefers to remain anonymous in all other regards. NEWS FLASH! Listen to this remake of "Rock and Roll Boy" by Jonathan Coulton. Simply Amazing! + it is the second remix of Rock and Roll Boy!

The Cheese Band (tracks: 4/22)
The Cheese Band tape was sent to us in 1997 by Mitch in the band! Mitch also goes by MC Paperclip and produces the band 10,000 Lakes. It has been a favorite for years! Download the entire Cheese Band Demo here on Comfort Stand. Dateline April 26, 2004 - THE CHEESE BAND HAS BEEN FOUND! Here is what they write: “I can't believe it!! I am the singer of The Cheese Band song, #22 on your Various Artists tape. I was probably 12 when I did that song and I am now 19 and still can't believe it. I have so many questions. Like where did you find the tape? When did you put it on the web? I want to know these things. The other Cheese Band song was done by my brother Ryan and sister Kristi. The songs were made in 1996 or 1997. My brother Mitch did the keyboards. This has to be the coolest thing ever. Again thanks for letting me relive the experience of my song making career.

Charlie and Todd (tracks: 5/8/11/14/17/19/21/24/26)
Submitted by Charlie Lewis of WFMU radio. Charlie writes, “These tunes were recorded by me (and my friend Todd) around 1970 or 1971, when I would have been about 12 years old, probably in my bedroom in Queens, NY, into a portable Panasonic cassette recorder. I've created a lot of music since then, but nothing with that degree of unselfconscious spontaneity, glee, and abandon.”

David (tracks: 07/16/23)
Larry writes, “The Recordings of "David" are by myself, Larry P, and Dave Ralston in 1996-8. When I heard these tracks, I knew that it had to be us, considering the guitar work. I was about 7 or 8 when my best friend Dave, did these. He never once did call me by my real name. The person playing the guitar is me, and I can say, at least I am much better at it now!! Thanks a lot for reminding me where I got may start.”Grandpa Norm (track: 29)
Submitted by Sweet Sweet Ted who writes, “My wife, Joy, is a nanny for a family here in Seattle. There are two young boys whom she takes care of. The family has some relatives who are located on the other side of the country. Occasionally, the oldest boy, Aidan, receives packages in the mail from these faraway family members. These packages usually include some books, toys, and audio cassettes. This particular tape is from Grandpa Norm.”
